Neuromancer (reading project)

I will be talking about neuromancer . i don’t think this book uses too much slang compared to a clockwork orange and i think when slang is used it will be more complicated like simstim , which means stimulation of the brain and nervous system of one person using a recording or live broadcast of another person’s experience. The fact that it uses less slang ( that’s more complicated) makes it easier to read even-though the idea behind it is quite complicated. this book is set in a dystopian future . This book is also part of a trilogy known as the sprawl trilogy. the main character case has a damaged nervous system after by a client ,that he double crossed in one of his jobs, where he used to go into the cyberspace . the character case has quite a lot going on in his life , not that he is busy with work but talking to people he knows and other things like getting attacked . The fact that this book is set in the future and is dystopian makes it even more interesting because there is advanced technology, but then that tech is then being abused by humans .

We don’t know whether neuromancer is accurate because it is set in the far future, so we could have technology even more advanced then in the book or it could be exactly like in the book . It most likely wouldn’t because the text was written in the twentieth century , when computers were quite a lot different .i do think humans will abuse technology in the future even more then we already do , if we get to a point where computers are in the human body that people will find a way to get into them and take advantage . Hackers would also steal important info, which they can sell and make money from. Data about people (personal details) on the internet(or computers) is already valuable ,which is why companies like Google sell it . In the future will probably be more expensive or more and more people will be doing it.

The slang used in this book is not like in other books eg. A Clockwork orange and it’s not even really like slang because it mostly uses words that have been invented , apart from some of the words (it does also have some Japanese words in) . The ideas behind the slang are really clever , especially for the time. I think the reason why this book got the award it did is because of the idea of the book , which i like .

One response to “Neuromancer (reading project)”

I’m really glad you liked Neuromancer. It’s certainly a book I really enjoyed, and I’ve read many William Gibson books since as well – and enjoyed every one!

The idea of the anti-hero is something I still want you to develop. Can Case be an anti-hero – and if so, what qualities does he show that qualify him. It would be great for you to go into the level of detail where you describe how he looks and how he speaks – using quotations for both.

To extend your thinking further – consider how the written style of the book, the setting and the tone also support the notion of an anti-hero genre. Are there any distinctive features that you want to pick up on that you may then be able to explore in relation to other texts?

Did you know that William Gibson actually made up the word “Cyberspace” and that when he wrote Neuromancer, the internet barely existed. There were no mobile phones and computers were mostly massive things that sat in big airconditioned rooms in buildings. He did an amazing job of predicting what might happen in the future, considering how much of what we now take for granted wasn’t even in existence then.

Have a go at adding to this response to the book, as I think it will be of real use to you over time.

    Righto!
