Education in America during the 1930s

I’m going to start on education during the 30s , i will be focusing on the south because this is where the book to kill a mockingbird is set .

The schools were segregated in the south , so there school for black children and white children .The schools were not equal , this is because white schools received more public funding , therefore they would be able to get better equipment and be able to learn better and do more things with their education . There were usually not as many schools available this is because most towns could only afford one school , so they made a white school. this happened mostly in rural towns where they would have little money .Fewer black children were in school .They were often pulled out because they were needed on the farm.

The condition for black schools were a lot worse, some of the buildings would have sagging floors , leaking roofs and windows without glass . the books used would be ones that had already been used in white schools . the schools were often overcrowded and there would not be enough teachers .There weren’t even enough desks for all the people in the class .

There was a foundation called the rosenwald foundation who sent $4 million to help build 5,000 black schools . Thousands of children received a good education in these schools .

Louis has wrote a really good piece about American education in the 1930s and has clearly explained how different black people and white people’s schools were. He explains how white people’s schools had much better equipment and facilities than black peoples schools. He also describes some of the conditions in the black people’s school’s such as the leaking roofs, saggy floors and broken windows. All the information he provides prints a clear picture in your mind on how different schools for black people and white people where back in America in the 1930s.
